My Services
I began using the Internet in 1993 while a student at the University of California, Santa Barbara. It took another year before I used my first browser, Mosaic, which later became Netscape Navigator. It took a few more years, but by 1997-98 I was producing very crude web sites using Microsoft Frontpage and some HTML. I then discovered Macromedia Dreamweaver 3.0, learned a little more HTML and Java Script, and joined Business.com as a research manager (aka, “information architect”). However, I didn’t admit to being a geek until 2006. Having come out of the techno-closet, I have finally faced the realization that I am motivated by the power of the Web and its ability to connect, educate, and empower non-geeks.
Today, I’m passionate about evangelizing open source software and online applications, helping people and businesses publish their web sites, and getting better at using the technology underlying digital publishing and creativity. I am available for the following types of projects:
Web Development
I provide development and design capabilities. Development may include determining the type and method of data and content to be displayed and accessed on your site, and the best programming language or code to accomplish your site’s goal. Design is the creation of unique page layouts, original graphics, and incorporating the visual aspects of the site into the structure and functionality of the site. I specialize in making web sites affordable by using templates, but altering them to reflect the unique nature of your site’s purpose or your specific business objectives.
Content Management
Managing the information, images, and other media used to communicate with your intended audience makes the difference in a site being usable and of interest to the visitor. A site where information is hard to find or non-existent is typically why visitors don’t return. It’s not always about the look and imagery, or how many things move and shimmy on the web page. I can train you or your project group on how to use one of many content management systems (CMS) that are available. I can also assume management of the CMS for those who have less time available to keep the site running and freshly updated.
I am especially eager to assist non-profits and other charitable organizations in benefiting from the use of a CMS-managed web site.
Weblogs (Blogs)
Weblogs are the tools of choice for many who are considered “non-techie” and proud of it. However, blogs are relatively easy to administer and keep fresh and provide everyone with access to the World Wide Web and self-publishing. I can help you find a solution that best fits your level of enthusiasm and visually connected to your own personality, artistic taste, or business interest.
Wikis
Wikis are used to create collaborative web sites and to power community-based organizations or groups. They are another form of CMS. Wikis are also used in businesses to provide affordable and effective Intranets and for enabling a firm’s potential knowledge management capacity.
Hosting
I can provide hosting for a number of select sites. However, I prefer to stick to what I’m most interested in: developing great sites that make their owners proud.
Publishing
Another area of interest I have is the layout and design of newsletters, magazines, and other print publications. Given the expense which can be prohibitive for some, portable document files (pdf’s) have long been one of the most efficient and cost-effective ways to distribute content to an audience. Pdf’s can now be designed to include many multi-media functions like Flash and interactive buttons and interfaces. Be on the look out for examples I’ll be displaying on the site.
Please contact me to discuss rates and project fees. If nothing else, I’ll make sure you take away some useful details that will help you find the solution appropriate for your need.
