Open Source CMS

As many of my clients are aware, I’m very attracted to any and all things open source, especially when it comes to affordability and ease of use. Free is definitely affordable. Ease of use is another matter.

For example, the blogging platform this site is built upon is free, but not exactly the easiest to use for content management. Yet, once you jump in and begin to learn its nuances and rules, you learn its inherent power as well. The same can be said about many content management systems, CMS for short. There are many varieties of CMS software out there, some you must pay for and a lot you don’t. The mission of The Drewery Publishing Group is to help folks get their content published, in this case as it relates to websites, according to their level of comfort and knowledge with running a website, and the tools necessary to update their sites with fresh content. “But how do you know which CMS tool to recommend?” you ask? It’s a matter of experience, testing, and trying to remain reasonably curious and current about tools that are forever being improved upon.

Being the geek that I am, I scour the Web for what’s new, exciting, and just plain wow! I also come across many applications and web tools that are just too complicated to recommend to many of my clients. Sometimes, the tools are too complicated for me. Once I know what my client’s intended audience is, what that audience will be doing when they use the client’s site, and how often the content on the site need to be refreshed or updated, I can reasonably choose a CMS tool to fit the occasion.

Managing the content of your site saves you money. Period. Making that process as uncomplicated as possible is why I’m hired to help. And we do love helping! It keeps us engaged in what’s happening in web design, development, and publishing. It also allows us to bring everyday, non-techie types into the realm of the greatest publishing and communication tools the world has ever seen.

Check out the links within this page, or if you really want to know more, visit my personal bookmarks for a listing of sites that either explain content management systems or allow you to test their applications without having to set up hosting or register a domain name. And if all else fails, we’re here to assist you in any way we can.
